Originally I said I wanted to use organic material to design representations of man made objects. In this project I wanted to create a representation of a natural ecosystem within an artificial environment. I used material that I found outside ( rocks, soil, moss, a vascular plant) and placed them within a closed space that allows for a self-sustaining micro-ecosystem. It does not require oxygen or watering because the moss creates a humid climate, which the roots of the plant will soak up and use to photosynthesize.
Though this seems like a completely natural piece, the act of putting it together and placing it within the glass container makes it part of the artificial realm. I believe that attempting to capture nature is something humans have always tried to accomplish. There are certain times, such as creating this self sustaining piece, that we are reminded that nature does not really need us.
